The Matrice 4TD NightTracker Wilderness Recovery Kit is the buck-finder setup built for operators who have outgrown entry-level thermal platforms and need a drone that keeps up with professional recovery volume, all-weather field conditions, and large-acreage operations. If you're building a buck recovery business and need a rig that works every night of the season, this is the one.
The IP55-rated fixed-arm airframe deploys faster than any folding platform and holds up in rain, dust, mud, and freezing temps. These are the conditions serious recovery work actually happens in. The 640x512 thermal sensor with super-resolution reads heat signatures through dense brush, fog, and total darkness.
The fixed-arm design means there's nothing to unfold at the truck when you're on a call. The AL1 Spotlight is included and tracks automatically with the gimbal so your light stays on whatever the camera is pointed at.
If you're running a recovery business, managing wildlife on a large working property, or operating in terrain and weather where a lighter platform gets grounded, this is the kit.
Standard delivery is 5 to 7 business days.

Who This Kit Is For
This is not the entry point into thermal drone recovery. It's where serious operators end up. The NightTracker is built for:
- Part 107 pilots running a recovery business with consistent call volume
- Ranch and property managers covering thousands of acres with regular wildlife management needs
- Operators working in regions with unpredictable weather who can't get grounded by a rain shower
- Search and rescue teams that need a durable wilderness thermal platform
- Anyone who has flown a lighter thermal drone and hit its limits in the field
If you're flying multiple sessions per week, covering properties where conditions change fast, or building a business where equipment failure costs you clients, the M4TD is the right answer. If you're just getting started in drone deer recovery and want the most capable entry point available, look at the M4T Rapid Deer Recovery Kit first.
How It Works in the Field
The fixed-arm airframe is in the air faster than folding platforms because there's no unfolding procedure at the tailgate when a client is waiting on a call.
Once airborne, the 640x512 thermal camera is reading heat through brush, tall grass, fog, or total darkness immediately. UHR mode pushes resolution higher for clean target identification at operational altitude without having to descend. Punch into the 48MP telephoto at 168mm equivalent to visually confirm species and condition from 250 meters before committing anyone to the ground.
The laser rangefinder drops a GPS pin on the exact location at up to 1,800 meters, so your ground team navigates directly to it.
The AL1 Spotlight tracks with the gimbal automatically so you're not manually steering light separately from the camera. Always-on mode for continuous ground team illumination during the approach. Strobe for signaling and visual coordination across a large search area. Night Scene mode runs full-color video in near-total darkness. IR-Cut Filter switches to high-contrast black-and-white when thermal clarity is the priority. The onboard NIR auxiliary light handles supplemental illumination at 100 meters without degrading thermal performance.
IP55 means rain and dust don't end the session.
The All-Weather Buck-Finder Advantage
Most thermal recovery drones quit when the weather turns. The NightTracker doesn't. The IP55 rating is the whole reason serious operators move to this platform: it's a weatherproof thermal drone built to keep flying in rain, dust, mud, and fog that ground a folding airframe.
When you're running a buck recovery business, the calls don't stop because it's drizzling. A wounded deer doesn't wait for clear skies, and neither can you. An all-weather deer recovery drone means you take the call, fly the grid, and find the animal while operators flying non-rated platforms are sitting in the truck waiting for the rain to pass.
This is the one capability that separates the 4TD from every lighter thermal drone in this price range. If you operate in the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest in late season, or anywhere weather is unpredictable, the IP55 buck-finder kit is the difference between a season of consistent calls and a season of cancellations.

Matrice 4TD vs Matrice 4T: Which Deer Recovery Drone Is Right for You
The Matrice 4TD and Matrice 4T run the same 640x512 thermal sensor and the same DJI Pilot 2 software. The difference is the airframe. The 4TD is IP55 weatherproof with a fixed-arm body for faster deployment, while the 4T is a folding platform with no official weather rating. Choose the 4TD for professional volume or all-weather operations. Choose the Matrice 4T for occasional or single-property recovery.
| Feature | Matrice 4T | Matrice 4TD |
|---|---|---|
| Weather Rating | No official IP rating | IP55 (rain, dust, mud) |
| Airframe | Folding | Fixed-arm (faster deployment) |
| Thermal Sensor | 640x512 with UHR | 640x512 with UHR |
| NIR Auxiliary Light | Optional | Included onboard |
| Best Fit | Occasional or single-property recovery | Professional volume or large working properties |
For occasional recreational use or single-property recovery, the M4T is the right call. For operators treating this as a business or managing large working properties year-round, the M4TD pays for the difference.
Wildlife Recovery and Ranch Applications
The NightTracker handles every thermal recovery and wildlife management application the M4T does. It just does them in worse weather, faster, and longer without stopping. Common uses include:
- Deer recovery and downed game location across any terrain or weather condition
- Feral hog detection and hog hunting coordination on large ranch properties
- Predator surveillance for coyotes and bobcats threatening livestock
- Lost pet recovery using thermal and spotlight coordination
- Wildlife surveys and population counts across large acreage
- Elk and bear recovery in mountain and backcountry terrain where weather is unpredictable
- Livestock and fence line monitoring without leaving the truck
- Wilderness search and rescue operations
For operators building a multi-revenue thermal drone business, the M4TD's IP55 rating means you're not turning down calls because of weather.
A Note on State Law
Drone use for hunting, wildlife recovery, and game animal location is regulated differently by every state. Some states permit drone deer recovery on private property, others restrict or prohibit it entirely, and some require additional permits or licenses. Before operating commercially or on private property for wildlife purposes, verify the rules with your state wildlife agency. Covert Drones cannot provide legal guidance on state-level drone hunting and wildlife regulations.
Optional Add-Ons
| Accessory | What It Does |
|---|---|
| DJI AS1 Speaker | 114 dB broadcast at 1 meter, 300m range. Play an owner's voice recording during lost pet searches to get a response. Use it for wilderness SAR callouts when ground teams need audio direction from the air. Mounts directly to the M4TD alongside the spotlight, both payloads run simultaneously. |
| Covert Tactical Vision 21.5" Field Monitor | Lets a second operator (a client, a ground team lead, or a trainee) watch the thermal and optical feed in real time without standing over the pilot. Useful for professional recovery operations where the client wants to follow along, or for coordinating multiple ground team members across a large search area. |
| PowerHub 200W Triple Charger | Charges 3 batteries simultaneously instead of one at a time. For operators running back-to-back sessions or multi-property nights, this closes the gap between rotations and keeps you in the field longer without waiting on the included hub. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Matrice 4TD and Matrice 4T for deer recovery?
The sensor package is the same. Both run a 640x512 thermal camera, three 48MP optical cameras, and a laser rangefinder. The differences are in durability, deployment speed, and operational limits. The M4TD has an IP55 weather rating for rain and dust. The M4T has no official IP rating and is not recommended for wet conditions. The M4TD's fixed-arm airframe launches without unfolding, which cuts setup time at the truck. For occasional recreational use, the M4T is the accessible entry point. For operators running a recovery business with regular call volume or covering large properties in variable weather, the M4TD is the platform that holds up.
Is the Matrice 4TD worth the upgrade for a drone recovery business?
If you're flying more than a few times per week, working in regions with unpredictable weather, or covering properties large enough that battery rotation and deployment speed affect your operations, yes. The IP55 rating means you're not turning down calls because of rain. The fixed-arm airframe means you're airborne faster on back-to-back sessions. For a part-time or recreational operator, the M4T is the more cost-effective starting point. For a professional building volume, the M4TD pays the difference back quickly.
How many acres can you cover with the Matrice 4TD in one night?
Coverage depends on flight altitude, search pattern, and terrain. With the 4-battery kit and hot-swap rotations, most operators can cover several hundred acres in a single evening session depending on conditions. The RTK positioning and waypoint navigation in DJI Pilot 2 let you pre-plan grid routes and resume them between batteries without retracing ground.
Can the Matrice 4TD fly in rain for wildlife recovery?
Yes. The IP55 rating means the M4TD is designed for dust and water resistance and is rated to handle rain, mud, and wet field conditions that would ground non-rated platforms. This is one of the primary reasons professional recovery operators and ranch managers move to the M4TD from the M4T. The IP55 rating does not mean the aircraft is submersible or rated for heavy sustained downpour, but for the rain and field moisture conditions that normal recovery work involves, the M4TD stays in service where other platforms don't.
How fast does the Matrice 4TD battery charge between recovery sessions?
The M4TD battery charges quickly between rotations using the included 240W charging hub. If you add the PowerHub 200W Triple Charger, you can charge three batteries simultaneously, which significantly tightens rotation time between sessions on a busy night. For professional operators running back-to-back calls, having a minimum of 4 batteries and a triple charger keeps downtime between searches as short as possible.
Can I use the Matrice 4TD for both deer recovery and hog control on the same property?
Yes, and this is one of the strongest arguments for the M4TD over single-purpose tools. The same aircraft, same sensor package, and same controller handle thermal deer recovery at night, daytime hog scouting and damage mapping, nighttime hog hunting coordination with ground teams, predator surveillance for coyotes and bobcats, livestock and fence line monitoring, and wilderness search and rescue. For ranch managers and property owners with diverse wildlife management needs, one M4TD platform covers every thermal application year-round, subject to applicable state laws.
What is the range of the DJI AL1 Spotlight on the Matrice 4TD?
The AL1 Spotlight illuminates targets up to 100 meters from the aircraft. It tracks automatically with the gimbal so your light stays on whatever the camera is pointed at without manual steering. Always-on mode runs continuous illumination for ground team navigation to a located target. Strobe mode flashes for signaling across a large search area or coordinating multiple ground team members. Wide-FOV mode opens the beam to cover a broader area during initial grid searches before switching to focused illumination once a target is located.
Do I need a Part 107 license to run a drone deer recovery business with the M4TD?
Yes. Any commercial drone operation, including getting paid to locate someone's deer, requires an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. The test is 60 multiple-choice questions with a fee of approximately $175. Most people pass after a few weeks of studying with a prep course. Recreational drone operation requires a TRUST certificate, which is available free online. Note that state wildlife laws also apply and vary significantly. Some states prohibit drone deer recovery entirely regardless of FAA certification. Verify your state's rules with your wildlife agency before operating.
Can the M4TD detect deer through thick timber or heavy brush?
The thermal camera reads infrared heat signatures from above and performs through brush, tall grass, light canopy, and fog. It doesn't require line of sight through vegetation the way optical cameras do. Dense hardwood canopy with heavy overhead cover can reduce thermal penetration since you're reading heat from altitude. Flying at lower altitude and using UHR mode to increase thermal resolution improves detection in heavily wooded terrain. Most recovery operators find the combination of altitude adjustment and UHR mode handles the majority of timber and brush situations they encounter.
